The Davidic Covenant

2 Samuel 7:8-17

8 Now, therefore, thus you shall say to my servant David, ‘Thus says the LORD ofhosts, I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, that you should be prince over my peopleIsrael. 9 And I have been with you wherever you went and have cut off all your enemies from before you.And I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones of the earth. 10 And I will appoint aplace for my people Israel and will plant them, so that they may dwell in their own place and bedisturbed no more. And violent men shall afflict them no more, as formerly, 11 from the time that Iappointed judges over my people Israel. And I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover, theLORD declares to you that the LORD will make you a house. 12 When your days are fulfilled and you liedown with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I willestablish his kingdom. 13 He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of hiskingdom forever. 14 I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. When he commits iniquity, I willdiscipline him with the rod of men, with the stripes of the sons of men, 15 but my steadfast love will notdepart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away from before you. 16 And your house and yourkingdom shall be made sure forever before me. Your throne shall be established forever.’” 17 Inaccordance with all these words, and in accordance with all this vision, Nathan spoke to David.

1 Kings 9:3-9

3 And the LORD said to him, “I have heard your prayer and your plea, which you havemade before me. I have consecrated this house that you have built, by putting my name there forever. My eyes and my heart will be there for all time. 4 And as for you, if you will walk before me, as David yourfather walked, with integrity of heart and uprightness, doing according to all that I have commandedyou, and keeping my statutes and my rules, 5 then I will establish your royal throne over Israel forever, asI promised David your father, saying, ‘You shall not lack a man on the throne of Israel.’ 6 But if you turnaside from following me, you or your children, and do not keep my commandments and my statutes thatI have set before you, but go and serve other gods and worship them, 7 then I will cut off Israel from theland that I have given them, and the house that I have consecrated for my name I will cast out of mysight, and Israel will become a proverb and a byword among all peoples. 8 And this house will become aheap of ruins. Everyone passing by it will be astonished and will hiss, and they will say, ‘Why has theLORD done thus to this land and to this house?’ 9 Then they will say, ‘Because they abandoned the LORDtheir God who brought their fathers out of the land of Egypt and laid hold on other gods and worshipedthem and served them. Therefore the LORD has brought all this disaster on them.’”
