Story

Planted by the Providence of God

Covenant started with a conviction to make the finished work of Christ the focal point in our theology, worship, and practice. Around 2018, many of us discovered that we were moving in the same direction theologically and desired to start something in Decatur where we could study God’s Word together.

In 2019, we began a bible study in the Oliver home. We met for dinner, singing, and teaching from God’s Word. Many friendships were formed and the bible study grew over the next several months. But then COVID happened in March 2020 and everything was disrupted. The various local churches that we had been attending and commuting to suddenly stopped holding in-person services. We likewise suspended our weekly bible study. It was a difficult time being cut off from our friendships and local churches. So after several weeks of being apart, we decided to start gathering outdoors for worship on Sunday mornings. This provided us the opportunity to put our Christ-centered theology into practice during worship. We never looked back.

We continued holding Sunday services through the summer months, and by the fall of 2020, we had decided to start a church plant. Several families participated in core team meetings and we eventually moved indoors for Sunday services. In January 2021, we officially constituted as a local church by receiving our first members, adopting a confession, and calling a pastor. Our church was founded on God’s grace in the gospel of Jesus Christ, the sufficiency of Scripture, the ordinary means of grace, and the power of the Spirit in our lives. We hope to reach others in the Decatur area with the gospel for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes.
